RWM (via Moscow)

RWM (All-Russian Scientific Research Institute for Physical-Engineering and Radio Technical Meteorology), transmitting from Moscow (Russia) was logged on 6, 7 and 11 March 2019. Reception from 13.28 till 13.31 UTC on 4.996 kHz (SSB/USB mode)rated a  (SINPO) of 22442 - poor signal detected under a dominant WWVH transmission, but audible. Reception from 14.44  till 17.45 UTC on 9.996 kHz (SSB/USB mode) was (SINPO) 45444. Reception from 04.00 till 04.30 UTC on 14.996 kHz (SSB/USB mode)was (SINPO) 35554. Content of transmission included straight unmodulated carrier wave, then 1 Hz pulses and double pulse, then10 Hz pulses and double pulse, followed by Morse code station identification: "RWM RWM RWM..." HERE is RWM (14.996 kHz)

Reception report was emailed on 12 March 2019. QSL cards arrived on 28 March 2019.





   
   


Madagascar World Voice (via Mahajanga)

Madagascar World Voice (New Life Station) via Mahajanga was received on 5 March 2019. English programming with Western pop songs was monitored from 20.00 UTC onward, on the short-wave frequency of 11.965 kHz rated a SINPO of 35433 -- fair signal, fading occasionally under atmospheric noise, but clear and audible content otherwise. HERE is MWV (Mahajanga). 

Reception report was emailed on the same day. QSL card arrived on 28 March 2019,

Radio Taiwan International via Paochung was logged on 4 March 2019. English language programmes "Journey Through Time" and "On the Line" was heard from 03.35 till 04.00 UTC (broadcast time 03.00 till 04.00 UTC). Reception on 15.320 kHz rated a SINPO of 55555. HERE is RTI.

Voice of Indonesia (via Pelangkaraya)

Voice of Indonesia transmitting from Pelangkaraya,  Kalimantan was logged on 16 June 2018. German language broadcast was monitored from 18.00 till 19.00 UTC. Reception on 3.325 kHz rated a  SINP0 55444 -- excellent signal strength and clarity despite slight fading.  HERE's VOI (via Radio Republik Indonesia Pelangkaraya transmitter).

Reception report was emailed the following day, back in June 2018. QSL card arrived on 27 March 2019.

Voice of America (via Meyerton)

Voice of America, transmitting from Meyerton (South Africa), was received on 23 March 2019. A English language programme called "South Sudan Focus" included news/current event reports about South Sudan, Sudan and Africa at large.from 16.30 till 17.00 UTC. Reception on the short-wave frequency of 11.850 kHz initially at sign-on was SINPO: 24321 -- weak signal, occasionally  audible content, atmospheric noise and some fading. By 16.40 UTC, signal was barely audible, occasionally fading under atmospheric noise, earning  a SINPO of 14221.

Reception report was emailed on the following day. This eQSL was received on 26 March 2019. Hopefully a similar paper QSL card will arrive in the mail later. 

As most DXers know the SENTEC Meyerton facility will cease operation on 31 March 2019. A few days remain should one wish to catch this once great transmitter site. The VOA QSL in itself is quite unique. 73.

CAMBODIA (Kampuchea)
National Radio of Kampuchea via Phnom Penh was logged on 18 March 2019. Khmer programming of music, talk and news was monitored from 11.00 UTC onward. SINPO on the medium-wave frequency of 918 kHz was 55555.

JAPAN
NHK World Radio Japan via Yamata was logged on 18 March 2019. Japanese progamming was observed from 04.00 UTC. SINPO on 15.590 kHz rated 45554.

MADAGASCAR
Madagascar World Voice (KNLS)
via Mahajanga was logged on 18 March 2019. Muisoc and religious programming in English was heard just before sign-off at 03.55 UTC.  SINPO on 15.510 kHz was 55555.

TAIWAN
Radio Taiwan International
was logged on 18 March 2019.  English service leading into Chinese programming was observed around 04.00 UTC. SINPO on 15.320 kHz was 54544 -- mixing with China Radio International/China National Radio.

SRI LANKA
Adventist World Radio via Trincomalee was on 20 March 2019. Tamil programming was observed from 14.30 till 14.45 UTC. Reception on the medium-wave of 1548 kHz rated a SINPO of 54544 -- strong signal and clear audio content with slight fading approximately every 10-12 minutes. Even then, signal remained audible. HERE is AWR (Trincomalee).

BBC via Tricomalee. This MW test transmission on 1548 kHz was logged on 20 March 2019. BBC News Hour with reports on  Brexit, Radovan Karadžić's war crimes trial,  Amnesty International's condemnation of US drone attacks in Somalia. nuclear power plant, China's decreased marriage rate, cyclone Idai's affect on Mozambique and Malawi and climate change was observed from 14.00 till 14.30 UTC. SINPO was 54544 -- strong signal and clear audio content with slight fading approximately every 10-12 minutes. Even then, signal remained audible. Powerful signal!!! HERE is BBC (Trincomalee).

WWVH (via Kauai)

Radio Station WWVH via Kauai, Hawaii was received on 7 March 2019. Time pips/pulses and time announcements every minute provided by a female announcer, followed station ID for WWVH and time was announced by female announcer with loud beep on the hour, then National Weather Service announcement and web site details was observed from 14.37 till 14.40 UTC. Reception on 5 mHz rated a SINPO of 45454 -- good signal and clear audio, despite atmospheric noise. HERE is WWVH.

Reception report was emailed on the following day. QSL card arrived in the mail on 22 March 2019.

Radio Free Asia (via Biblis)

Radio Free Asia via Biblis, Germany was heard on 13 January 2019. Burmese programming with RFA signature interval/ID and in depth reports on Myanmar was  observed from 00.30 till 01.00 UTC. SINPO on the short-wave frequency of 9.510 kHz rated 55555 -- excellent reception. HERE is RFA (Biblis). 

Reception report was submitted online and emailed. Follow-up emails were sent in February. QSL card, marking the Chinese New Year for the Year of the Pig, finally arrived on 14 March 2019.

Logbook from 3 till 11 March 2019

AFGHANISTAN
Radio Afghanistan (National Radio Television Afghanistan)
, transmitting from Kabul, was logged on 3 March 2019. News, commentary and local Afghan music in Dari or Pashto was observed from16.00 till 16.30 UTC. Reception on 6.100 kHz at 16.00 UTC initially rated a SINPO of 22432 -- weak signal mixing with KCBS Pyongyang, fading but with audible content. At 16.20 UTC, signal improved to SINPO -- 24432 -- still weak signal, but much clearer audio with no interference from KCBS Pyongyang. This changed around 16.28 UTC when Radio Romania International's interval and subsequent broadcast voided reception of RTA. HERE is RTA as heard in Malaysia.

CHINA
China National Radio 1 /PBS via Yushu was logged on 5 March 2019. Chinese programming, mostly talk format, mixing under Radio Taiwan International was monitored from 14.10 till 14.30 UTC. Reception on the short-wave frequency of 6.075 kHz was SINPO 12431 -- weak signal strength, with strong co-frequency QRM from Radio Taiwan International, yet still audible underneath RTI. HERE is CNR (Yushu) station ID mixing under RTI.

ENGLAND
KBS World Radio via Woofferton was heard on 4 March 2019. Russian programmes on how to speak Korean and information technology segment was monitored from 18.35 till 19.00 UTC (broadcast time 18.00 till 19.00 UTC). Reception on the short-wave frequency of 6.040 kHz rated a SINPO of 35443 -- good signal strength, clear audio content, some atmospheric noise. HERE is KBS World Radio (via Woofferton).

ETHIOPIA
Radio Amhara via Bahir Dar was logged on  5 March 2019. A rousing speech in Amharic was noted after 20.10 UTC. Reception on 6.090 khz was SINPO 35333 - fair signal strength, some atmospheric noise and occasional fading, otherwise content was clear and audible. HERE is Radio Amhara.

Radio Fana
via Addis Ababa was logged on  5 March 2019. A selection of Horn of Africa music and Oromo programming was monitored at 20.08 UTC. Reception on 6.110 kHz rated a SINPO of 35443 -- strong signal with clear audio. HERE is Radio Fana.

FRANCE
Deutsche Welle via Issoudun was logged on 6 March 2019. An Amharic broadcast of news, current event reports pertaining to Africa and Horn of Africa music was monitored from 16.00 till 16.45 UTC (broadcast time 16.00 till 17.00 UTC). Reception on the short-wave frequency of 11.995 kHz was SINPO 45444 -- fair to good signal strength, clear and audible content, despite some fluttering atmospheric noise. HERE is DW (Issoudun).

HAWAII
Radio Station WWVH
via Kauai was received on 7 March 2019. IRAN
Voice of Islamic Republic of Iran via  Sirjan logged on 4 March 2019. Bengali progamming was received from 16.22 ill 16.50 UTC. Reception on 6.155 kHz was SINPO 34543 -- good signal strength but more carrier than actual audio. Still, signal was audible and clear until 00.30 UTC when Nippon no Kaze il bon ue baram (Paochung) was heard mixing with VOIRI. At that point SINPO was 22521.

MADAGASCAR
Madagascar World Voice (New Life Station) via Mahajanga was received on 5 March 2019. Russian programming with Western pop songs was monitored from 19.30 till 20.00 UTC. from on the short-wave frequency of 9.690 kHz rated a SINPO of 35433 -- fair signal, fading occasionally under atmospheric noise, but clear and audible content otherwise. HERE is MWV (Mahajanga).

MALI
China Radio International
via Bomako was logged on 5 March 2019. English programming with commentary on US-China relationship and comparisons to it in the 1960s. This was observed at 15.05 till 15.29 UTC, then station ID leading into another programme. Reception on 13.685 kHz rated a SINPO of 34433 -- fair signal, clear and audible content, despite slight fade. By 15.30 UTC, signal worsened often fading under atmospheric noise. HERE and HERE is CRI (via Bomako).

ROMANIA
Radio Romania International
via Galbina was, received on 6 March 2019. An Arabic broadcast of topics on Romania was monitored from 16.45 ill 16.57 UTC.16.45 till 16.57 UTC (broadcast time 16.30 till 16.57 UTC). Reception on 6.100 KHz was SINPO 44444 - good signal strength, some co-frequency interference under your signal, otherwise clear and audible content. HERE is an excerpt from Radio Romania International's Arabic broadcast.

RUSSIA

Reception on 4.996 kHz was SINPO 22442 -- poor signal detected under a dominant WWVH transmission, but audible. Reception on 9.996 kHz was SINPO 45444. And 14.996 kHz rated a SINPO of 35554.

SWAZILAND
Trans World Radio Africa via Manzini was logged on 5 March 2019.  Lingala programming was observed after 19.00 UTC. SINPO on 9.940 kHz was 24343.

TAIWAN

via Emirler was logged on 6 March 2019. The last half of their English language broadcast to South Asia included many nice Turkish pop songs, just before sign off, from 18.00 till 18.25 UTC (broadcast time 17.30 till 18.25 UTC). Reception on  11.730 KHz was SINPO 55555. HERE is TRT.

VIETNAM
Voice of Vietnam
via Hanoi was received on  3 March 2019. Russian programmes of news, current events and Vietnamese pop music was heard from 16.30 till 17.00 UTC. Reception on the short-wave frequency of 9.730 kHz initially was SINPO 34343 -- fair signal, no co-frequency interference, clear audio despite slight fading and atmospheric noise. HERE is VOV.

The Overcomer Ministry (via Kostinbrod)

The Overcomer Ministry via Kostinbrod (Bulgaria) was heard on 7 January 2019. The usual Brother Stair programming was monitored from 17.45 till 18.15 UTC. SINPO on the short-wave frequency of 9.400 kHz was 45554 -- good signal strength, clear audio, no interference, no fading.

Reception report was mailed to The Overcomer Ministry. It's the only way one can receive paper QSL card. Send an email, one will receive an eQSL. I took this route many times from various transmitter sites used by The Overcomer Ministry, and always an eQSL was sent. That said, this particular QSL card, along with a cover letter and printed religious material from Brother Stair, arrived in the mail on 8 March 2019.

Voice of Turkey, transmitting from Emiler, was logged on 14 February 2019. Turkish pop music and a programme entitled "Did You Know That.." with frequent station IDs was monitored from 18.00 till 18.25 UTC (broadcast time 17.30 till 18.25 UTC). Reception  on 11.730 kHz was SINPO 55544  -- strong signal, clear audio, despite slight and occasional fading. HERE is Voice of Turkey.

Radio Taiwan International

Radio Taiwan International via Paochung was heard on 14 February 2019, from 04.00 till 05.00 UTC. News, "Here in Taiwan", hosted by John van Trieste and Shirley Lin, featured stories on Chinese New Year ritual of "Getting Back in to the Swing of Things", a Hong Kong dog that became "Stray to Hero" in Taiwan, and New Year cartoon haircut of "Pepper the Pig." "Ear to the Ground," hosted by Andrew Ryan, profiled the feeding of hot porridge to homeless Taiwanese in New City Taipei,  "Jade Bells and Bamboo Pipes", hosted by Carlton Wong, featured three music compositions, including "Caprice of Jasmine in June," "Heart Full of Sorrow," and a martial arts sportswoman variation on a traditional tune. Reception on 15.320 kHz rated (SINPO) 55555 - Excellent, except at 04.40 UTC when CRI/CNR abruptly and briefly (a few minutes) interfered degrading reception to 54554. At 05.00 UTC, CRI/CNR again interfered, but RTI remained the dominant signal.

Voice of America Calendar 2019 for March


Voice of America Calendar 2019 for March.

 FEATURED: Big Sur Highway 1 runs 90 miles through Big Sur with the stunning Santa Lucia Mountains to the east and the beautiful Pacific Coast to the west. The trail has numerous viewpoints and turnouts to stop and take in the scenery. It is not uncommon to see California's unique wildlife including California condors and migrating grey, humpback and blue whales along the way.
