50th Anniversary of the First Tahiti-France Radio Link

FRENCH POLYNESIA (TAHITI) on 18 December 1965 offered a First Day Cover stamp marking the 50th Anniversary of the first Tahiti-France radio link (29 December 1915).

I am assuming "radio link" is referring partly to ORTF to Radio Tahiti as well as other communication links.

I obtained this FDC because Radio Tahiti was one of those Asia-Pacific stations I logged in the 1970s while living in Colorado (USA). I especially remember listening at nights. Polynesian music played non-stop while it snowed in Denver, and I would imagine sunny, palm-fringed beaches and beautiful people in native dress, far away from this miserable cold, grey, snowy winter's night.

Centenary Anniversary of Public Radio Broadcasting in Australia

AUSTRALIA POST on 17 October  2013 marked a century of public radio broadcasting in Australia with a stamp illustrated by Harry Slaghekke and inspired by a 1940s Max Dupain photoshoot for the AWA Radiola. Postmark for this First Day Cover originated from Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

The console radio design was set to the “Music Lovers Hour” on 2BL, now known as ABC Radio Sydney. Initially called 2SB, 2BL made the first official broadcast in Australia on 23 November 1923.

Harry Slaghekke has beautifully illustrated this iconic scene that was a snapshot into many Australian homes during the 1940s. The postwar period around 1949 was an optimistic time, radio was on still its own. Television hadn’t made an impact yet. Everybody got their news, their entertainment, children had programs, teenagers. There were serials, dramas and comedy shows.

On a side note, ABC 2BL Sydney is still operating on 702 kHz (MW/AM). This 50,000 watt station can be received in Central West Malaysia in the early morning hours when the path of night covers New South Wales to Kuala Lumpur. HERE is 2BL as heard in Malaysia, back 2017. Reception is occasionally much better than this recording.

CORREOS SAHARA ESPANA issued a set of eight stamps on 30 September 1964. The series was designed by J.J. de Castro. Perforation was 13 x 12 1/2. They were printed in Spain.  The theme appears to have been radio communication of music across the Spanish Sahara. Shown here:

- 50CNTS, 1.50PTAS, 3PTAS,  a dromedary (one-humped) camel  in the background and a young man in traditional attire with flute performing a tune; and

- 70CNTS, 2PTAS, 10PTAS, a young woman dressed in regional clothes and ornaments performing a song on a traditional drum.

\

Spanish Sahara (Sahara Español in Spanish and الصحراء الإسبانية‎‎ — As-Sahrā’a Al-Isbānīyah in Arabic), officially the Overseas Province of the Spanish Sahara (Provincia Ultramarina del Sahara Español and إقليم الصحراء الإسبانية ما وراء البحار), was the name used for the modern territory of Western Sahara when it was occupied and ruled as a territory by Spain between 1884 and 1975. Spanish Sahara lay between Mauritania and Morocco and bordered Algeria to the northeast. Under UN pressure, Spain eventually relinquished its colonial claim in 1976.

Radio Philately: Saar Schwartzenberg Radio & Observation Tower -1956

SAAR (under French protectorate) issued on 6 May 1956 a 15 Fr postage stamp showing the Schwartzenberg telecommunications and observation tower on Schwartzenberg,  Saarbrücken. Postmark originated from Hilbringen Über Merzig, (Saar).

The square - section tower was built in 1930 of reinforced concrete. The builder of the tower was undertaken by the St. Johann Beautification Society, and the design was drawn up by the Saarbrücken city architect at the time, Hermann Leiber . The foundation stone was laid on 27 June 1930, and the tower was inaugurated on 12 October 1930.

During World War II, the Schwarzenberg Tower was only slightly damaged, and the damaged portion was repaired in 1949.

Due to its height at 377 meters above sea level, the Schwarzenberg Tower has been used by several operators for radio purposes since the 1950s. Transmitters for police and fire brigade radio, VHF radio and mobile radio are currently installed on the top of the tower.
