Gong Xi Fa Chi from Radio Romania International

Gong Xi Fa Chi. Or, best wishes for joy and prosperity in the coming year. Normally I expect this Chinese New Year greeting from countries with a Chinese speaking community. But, Radio Romania International? Never.

To my surprise Radio Romania International did indeed send the above Chinese New Year eCard. The next question is why? It might have something to do with a recent reception report submitted to the Chinese language department at Radio Romania International. To say the least, it is a rare and novel greeting from Europe.

Incidentally, Chinese New Year 2015, the Year of the Goat, falls on Thursday, 19 February. Gong Xi Fa Chi.

Italian Group Free Wave have organised a radiophonic contest that will be on the shortwaves in Amplitude Modulation, 1st March 2015. The Game is very simple. “TAKE THE MESSAGE".

Each free station will be on air at different times, in their own quarters, transmitting a single part of a complete message in Italian and English, that is not the same. Your challenge is to recreate the complete message!

All parts of the message start with a particular advising sound for all free stations. The single part of the message will be transmitted following this schedule:

6.870 Radio Samurai from 08.00 to 08.30 UTC
6.875 Radio Europe from 08.30 to 09.00 UTC

7.300 Radio U-Boat 66 from 10.00 to 10.30 UTC
7.300 Mistero Ghost Planet from 10.30 to 11.00 UTC
The complete message will be transmitted instead only via:
3.905 Radio Arcadia from 21.00 to 22.00 UTC

To participate in the game you only have to recreate the complete message, but you also have to write the single part you  heard from each Italian Free Station.

All short-wave listeners may participate in the game by using either their own radio/antenna or by web-SDR receiver. Please send your report to: radioalleanza@gmail.com

International Contest Rank and Special Paper Certificate
The first through fifth report(s) emailed and received without mistakes will get a paper QSL direct to your postal address (if provided).

To compose the final ranking we will consider the time when we received your email. The ranks of Italian short-wave listeners and International short-wave listeners will be separated, and we will send a total of 10 paper certificates. The final results will be published within 10 days from 1 March  2015. We hope good conditions prevail, and we invite you to participate to the Game!

Chelmsford Calling World Service

The Chelmsford Calling World Service is a light entertainment programme produced by Jim Salmon - 'Sunny Jim' from the Chelmsford Calling Network - set up with the aim of promoting radio technology past, present and future.

CCWS is based in the heart of Chelmsford, Essex in the UK - home of Guglielmo Marconi's first wireless factory and the 'birthplace of radio'! Their programme consists of 10 to 15 minute features, including Media Magazine / The Wireless Years / The Elettra Report / Sunny Jim's Trance Journey / Listening Post. Great stuff! Truly interesting and enlightening! I heartily recommend listeners tune in, especially if one enjoys the hobby of radio listening.

Reception reports are appreciated, and Jim Salmon will reply first with an eQSL. Much to my surprise, and delight, he posted from the UK and signed the above paper QSL, verifying reception of CCWS via WRMI. Thank you very much, Jim!

Trans World Radio (via Estonia)*

Trans World Radio*, transmitting from Tartu, Estonia, was logged on 13 September 2014. A Russian language broadcast with occasional instrumental music, station IDs and promos for TWR, and Evangelical Christian programming was monitored from 18.30 till 19.00 UTC.

Reception on the medium -wave frequency of 1035 kHz was (SINPO) 54534 -- near perfect reception except for some QRM from a UK station operating on or near the same frequency, especially during station fade out.

Reception report was emailed on 13 September 2014. A few follow-up emails were sent later. Finally, on 3 February 2015, Kalman Dobos, Broadcast Monitoring | TWR, emailed with the above eQSL and apologised for the long delay, mentioning other projects had taken priority.
