Channel 292 / OHR (Offshore Radio History)

Channel 292 / OHR (Offshore Radio History)*, transmitting from Rohrbach, Germany, commemorated the 40th anniversary of Radio North Sea International's final transmission with a special re-broadcast on 30 August 2014. The last four broadcast hours of this historic broadcast was featured. In the first hour, from 17.55 to 19.00 UTC, veteran DJ "Daffy Don Allen" recalled his tenure with Radio North Sea, Radio Caroline and Manx Radio. He chatted about Louise Quirk who hosted "Skyline"  and presented an advertisement for Nobel Park Hotel in Zurich. He inserted "Hank's" goofy...maniac laughter between pop songs of the era, including Andy Williams - "Speak Softly", The Hollies - "Magic Woman Touch",  The Roaring Sixties - "We Love the Pirates", Peters & Lee - "Don't Stay Away Too Long", Susan Raye - "I've Got A Happy Heart", Ray Stevens -  "The Streak", Labi Siffre - "Crying, Laughing, Loving, Lying", and Jim Reeves - "Adios". Broadcast continued with the last three hours of RNI.

Interestingly, while scanning the dial I noticed at least three short-wave pirates  relayed this special OHR broadcast of Radio North Sea International over their respective transmitters on the same day.

Reception on 6.070 kHz was (SINPO) 55444 -- good to excellent signal strength, slight atmospheric noise at times. Otherwise it was a decent signal for some great listening!!! Enjoyed the show, but too early in the morning in Malaysia (after 03.00 am) to listen to the entire show.

Reception report was emailed to Channel 292 the following day. The above eQSL arrived on 4 November 2014.

Radio Nord Revival on 9.295 kHz

Radio Nord Revival, transmitting from presumably from Ringvalla, Sala, Sweden, was logged again on 23 August 2014. Reception on this occasion was received directly in Malaysia, using a Tecsun S-2000 linked to a 1/4 wave aerial. Oldies music, including a 1950s guitar solo, Four Preps - "Down By The Station" and The Crests - "Sixteen Candles", along with station IDs and discussion about Radio Nord in Swedish/English, was observed from 22.10 to 22.50 UTC.

Reception on 9.295 kHz in USB mode at 22.10 UTC was (SINPO) 24311 -- poor to weak signal strength, static bursts and long fades between audible, sometimes indecipherable speech. At 22.50 UTC signal was inaudible due to utility QRM and gradual loss of grey-line path between Europe and South East Asia. Nevertheless, a decent enough signal radiated from eastern Sweden, using a 10 kW transmitter with a 12-metre elevated antenna.

HERE is a recording of this transmission as heard in Kuala Lumpur. Reception was poor and barely audible, but their signal was definitely present, just long enough to identify songs and speech. Transmission may have been received possibly earlier in Asia, well before 22.10 UTC (when I caught their broadcast). Transmission commenced at 19.00 UTC, according to their blogsite.

One of the TXer sites, "The Castle" off Vaxholm, Sweden
I was initially thrilled to catch them from a remote receiver in the Netherlands. Now I am over the moon, ECSTATIC to hear this low-powered station and their broadcast of nostalgic music and talk in Malaysia!!! Hopefully a QSL will be forthcoming.

Reception report was emailed and posted in subsequent days to Ronny Forslund at Radio Nord Revival. On 29 December 2014, Ronny Forslund at Radio Nord Revival emailed to say "Your QSL card for the Radio Nord Revival transmissions in August is in the mail. Happy New Year from Sweden!" The promised QSL card did indeed arrive in the mail on 8 January 2015. I am immensely proud of this DXing feat. This marks my second station QSLed from Sweden, the other being Radio Sweden!!! THANK YOU, RADIO NORD REVIVAL!!!
