QSL in the Mail

A few days ago a QSL card and sticker from Radio Habana Cuba arrived in the letterbox. Neither record nor recall of a reception report exists. Who knows? Maybe I did listen to RHC back on 17 February 2016 at 23.30 UTC on 15.230 kHz. And, I may have inadvertently mentioned it in a follow-up email that their signal was still radiating beyond the island to the shores of Malaysia. In any event, it seems consistent with all those occasions when I have received this Caribbean station. Whether I did or did not send the report, I thank you, Radio Habana Cuba!

Puntland Radio One

Puntland Radio One is back on air. In a series of emails from Mr. Jamal, Director General of Puntland TV/Radio Garowe Puntland Somalia, I received not only confirmation of their test transmission in April 2015 but for 24 October 2016 as well. In the course of our correspondence he informed me that their transmitter had been "off and not working" due to "Technical problem" for much of 2015 up until July 2016. He further requested I listen to their transmission on 13.800 kHz. Mr. Jamal stated their transmission time is "from 6:30AM to 9:00Am East Africa Time (03.30 till 06.00 UTC) and from 1:00PM to 7:00PM East Africa Time (10.00 till 16.00 UTC)."

Puntland Radio One, transmitting from Garowe (Puntland Somalia), was logged on 24 October 2015. Horn of Africa music, Quran recitation and talk was observed from 11.55 UTC till 12.40 UTC.

Reception on 13.800 kHz was (SINPO) 34343 -- fair signal strength, clear audio with occasional atmospheric noise when not fading. HERE's an excerpt from the Puntland Radio One broadcast.

Reception report was emailed to the Mr. Jamal at Director General at Puntland Radio/TV, shortly after logging the station. He promptly replied to this report with an email, affirming the audio files listened to were indeed from Puntland Radio One.

See previous blog entry for email.

Radio Taiwan International

Radio Taiwan International, transmitting from Paochung, was received on 21 October 2016 from 15.00 till 16.00 UTC. An English broadcast of news and programmes "Curious John", "Chinese Culture 101" and "Feast Meets West" was heard during this hour long transmission. Reception on 11.685 kHz was (SINPO) 54554 -- excellent signal strength, slight interference, excellent audio quality.

Reception report was emailed and submitted online on the following day. QSL card arrived in the mail on 15 November 2016.

Radio Nikkei 1 (via Chiba-Nagara)

Radio Nikkei 1,  transmitting from Chiba-Nagara (Japan), was logged on 21 October 2016. A selection of uninterrupted Led Zeppelin music, particularly from their fourth album, was observed from 10.30 till 11.00 UTC. Reception on 9.595 kHz at the outset was (SINPO) 35443 -- fair signal strength and clear frequency. Unfortunately at 10.50 UTC, station splatter from China Radio International tuning degraded reception to 32442, at which point it became apparent CRI would soon  overpower Radio Nikkei 1. At the top of the hour, CRI did just that, even though transmission was on 9.590 kHz.

Reception report was emailed  and submitted online on the following day. QSL card arrived in the mail on 3 October 2016.

Radio Habana Cuba Announces 2017 Pocket Calendar

Radio Havana Cuba's 2017 pocket calendar is available already. It shows the fourth and last portrait of Fidel Castro, which was made for his 70th birthday in 1996, by Oswaldo Guayasamín, Painter of Iberoamerica.

The image entitled "Fidel with hands" carries the signature and a phrase from the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, whose 90th birthday was celebrated last August 13th.

That small work of art was edited by the Spanish Association of Culture and International Cooperation in Madrid, and the Guayasamin Foundation based in Quito, Ecuador.

Requests must be sent to Radio Havana Cuba, P. O. Box 6240, Havana, Cuba or through the e-mail radiohc@enet.cu. Don´t forget to indicate your updated address.

All India Radio Leh

All India Radio Leh, transmitting from Ladakh, now the Leh district in the Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir (India), was logged on 18 October 2016. Normally impossible to receive due to strong interference from AIR Port Blair, the Leh station was observed from 13.30 till 16.30 UTC

At 13.30 UTC, reception of AIR Leh on 4.760 kHz was initially marked by a dominant carrier, fading in every few seconds. By 14.00 UTC signal strengthened with occasional peaks of faint audio amidst a still dominant carrier, rating an SINPO of  25431. Audio improved slightly after 16.00 UTC with SINPO of 25432.  Reception was decent enough in the last half hour to record a bit traditional Ladakh music.

Reception report was emailed with audio file to AIR Leh and Spectrum Management & Spectrum, the following day. QSL arrived on 18 November 2016. Follow up QSL on 7 December 2016.

QSL in the Mail

Confirmation of All India Radio Varanasi  arrived in the letterbox, today. While I am pleased to have a QSL card for this medium-wave station, I am still anxiously awaiting verification for the  AIR Gantok short-wave outlet, which I was able to log when VL8A in Alice Spring (Australia) was briefly off the airwaves, last month. Additionally, medium-wave station AIR Cuttuck remains to be verified.  Aside from these AIR stations, Spectrum Management & Synergy has been exceptionally efficient to confirm all reports -- 20 or so medium- and short-wave stations -- over the past two years. Thank you, AIR and Spectrum Management & Synergy!

QSL in the Mail

Yippie!!! Verification from Free Radio Service - Holland on their 36th Anniversary broadcast. I am absolutely over the moon with this QSL. First, because it is from a low-powered station operating between 350 to 500 watts (QSL and accompanying FRS letter state different levels of output power). And, secondly, because this marks the first time a station from Holland has been logged directly in Malaysia. This makes FRS - Holland a new station from a new country. Thank you very much for this much-prized QSL, Peter Verbruggen!

This one hour programme, from 00.00 till 01.00 UTC, was largely dedicated to the worldwide outpouring of condolences to King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the Great. As usual with all RTWS broadcasts, the tourism and public relations departments work in tandem to promote the country, so several advertisements for events and developments in the nation were highlighted. I was particularly surprised to learn of  the BANGKOK BROADCASTING MUSEUM dedicated to radio and TV broadcasting. At the top of the hour, clock chimes and the Thai national anthem was heard, followed by a Thai language broadcast.

Reception on 15.590 kHz was (SINPO) 55545 -- good signal strength, clear audio, slight fading. This was to be expected considering my relatively close geographic proximity.

Reception report was emailed on the same day. Unfortunately, Radio Thailand World Service -- and for that matter, many Thai stations -- have failed to reply to requests for their QSL card in the past year. Hopefully, this will not be the case this time around, considering a different email address was announced during their broadcast. Listed below is not only this new email address, but the previously known one. Both appear to be functional. After a few follow-up emails, RTWS replied with this email: "It's good to know that our shortwave can be listened clearly in KL. Our QSL card will  be sent to you soon". QSL card did indeed arrive in the mail on 4 October 2016.

FEBC Manila (via Iba)

FEBC Manila, transmitting from Iba (Philippines), was logged on 13 October 2016. A Lao broadcast of presumed Evangelical topics and Lao songs were observed from 23.35 till 00.00 UTC (broadcast time 23.30 till 00.00 UTC). After the signature interval of FEBC, a Khmu broadcast followed at 00.00 UTC.

Interestingly, Khmu is the language of the Khmu people in northern Laos. It is spoken in adjacent areas of Vietnam, Thailand and China. Khmu lends its name to the Khmuic branch of the Austroasiatic language family, the latter of which also includes Khmer and Vietnamese. I mention this only because FEBC is dedicated to broadcasting in many Asian dialects which larger broadcasters do not.

Reception on 9.795 kHz was (SINPO) 54544 -- good signal strength, clear audio, despite slight fading and minor co-frequency or station splatter from China Radio International.
Reception report was emailed to FEBC Manila a few hours later, on the following day. An eQSL and letter arrived on 17 October 2015, after a follow-up email.

Souvenir in the Mail

A month or so back KBS World Radio contacted their listeners and asked them to complete an Overseas Listener Satisfaction Survey. Those who did were promised a souvenir in return for their effort.  True to their word, I had the good fortune to be one of their recipients and receive this cloth tote bag and a few stickers. It's a simple marketing device, but an effective way to reward one's clientele, listeners, in this case. Thank you, KBS World Radio!

Day of German Unity Souvenirs from International Broadcasters

Deutsche Welle "Eingemauert" QSL Card
OCTOBER 3. This seems like an insignificant date to most people in the world. Yet, the date  commemorates Tag der Deutschen Einheit (Day of Unity in Germany).  It marks the anniversary of German reunification in 1990, when the goal of a united Germany -- which originated in the middle of the 19th century -- was fulfilled once again. This national holiday addresses neither the re-union nor the union, but rather the unity of Germany.

I thought why not look back on how this day has been marked over the years by a couple of international radio broadcasters, most notably Deutsche Welle and Global 24.

Back in 2010-2011, Deutsche Welle issued a QSL card and DVD entitled Eingemauert (Walled In). The DVD featured a documentary and timeline pamphlet on the Berlin Wall. Along with the DVD, a complementary QSL card was gifted to radio listeners.

Eingemauert may be viewed at this YouTube link.

In 2014, Global24 featured a special broadcast of music and commentary on the Berlin Wall.  A commemorative  QSL card for the broadcast was advertised to entice listeners to submit their reception reports in exchange for the card. To the best of my knowledge none or few, if any, cards were ever actually issued. In my case, Jeff White at WRMI subsequently verified with a WRMI card.

For the 25th anniversary of the fall of The Berlin Wall of Sound, the audio platform SoundCloud -- using its own features and tools -- created an audio visual memorial for the victims of the Berlin Wall. It comprised over seven minutes of original propaganda from former German Democratic Republic politicians, voices of border guard, embedded in sounds and frequencies, to allow one to not only remember the events, but feel them.

Proposed Global24 QSL
Glücklicher Tag der Deutschen Einheit zu meinen deutschen Freunden!
